GSS 2432 - CIVIC MINDFULNESS IN THE 21ST CENTURY |
This course examines the question of how do we encourage individuals to care about people in their immediate family and neighborhood as well as people in the larger world community. The Universe of Obligation identified by Dr. Helen Fein will serve as the central concept throughout the course and will provide the foundation by which students will explore the range of human responses to genocide, atrocities and disaster, paying particular attention to bystander behavior. We will explore concrete cases of when individuals and groups have intervened to help victims and the challenges they faced in their efforts, and students will be given opportunities to design their own plans for humanitarian intervention working.
